A lawyer is a trained legal advisor. They usually advise clients on a specific area of the law in their country, in which they have become an expert. There are different divisions of lawyers in some countries. In the UK, they are generally divided into solicitors – who work in offices and give their clients legal advice – and barristers/counsel (known as advocates in Scotland) – who represent their clients in court. When not in court, barristers work in offices known as chambers. In the US, there are fewer formal distinctions, but a lawyer is often known more formally as an attorney.
